On October 18, 2013, in Ulianovsk, the IX Russian Scientific and Practical Conference “Modnikov Readings” was held, in which issues were discussed concerning modern combined treatment of cancer. The focus was on innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and rehabilitation of patients.
The conference was opened by Sergey Panchenko, the chief oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Ulianovsk Region and head medical officer of Regional Cancer Center. He noted that this annual conference brings together the best oncologists of the Ulianovsk Region and serves as a platform for open discussion on theoretical and practical topics.
Participants of the current event focused on the problems of breast cancer therapy, which are extremely acute today: for examples, in 2011 specialists have registered more than 57,000 new cases of this disease in Russia, and the total number of patients with this diagnosis reached 500,000 people. In general, according to various sources, breast cancers contribute to about 15 to 20% of all cancers. During the event, oncologists discussed the problems of diagnosis and treatment and current aspects of therapy. Much attention was paid to drug therapy, in particular, chemotherapy and radiology. The authors of presentations have paid great attention to the need to personalize breast cancer treatment and choose the treatment regimen, which will give the best results in each case.
This is necessary, among all, because such treatments are expensive, cause many side effects, so the regimen has to be chosen strictly on individual basis.
However, the treatment of cancer is not limited to the use of modern methods of treatment and newer drugs. The quality of life of cancer patients is no less important. Experts have noted that it is necessary to create an environment for the patients, when their life is not limited to the disease only. Marat Sharafutdinov, Associate Professor of oncology and radiology, a member of the Coordinating Council of IPM Movement Against Cancer presented to conference participants a new monograph “Quality of life in palliative medicine”.
According to tradition, during the conference the monetary grants were awarded by the Charitable Foundation named after professor O.P. Modnikov. Surgeon of municipal polyclinic No. 3 Yury Smolin was awarded as the best doctor - specialist of primary cancer room. Natalia Semenova, an obstetrician of the Novomalyklinskaya Central District Hospital, was awarded in nomination “The best obstetrician of examining room for women”. A nurse of the municipal polyclinic No. 4 Tatyana Bolotova was recognised as “the best nurse of examining room for men”. The grant for the best young scientist was awarded to Oksana Arapova, who is a physician at Regional Cancer Center and postgraduate student of the Department of Oncology and Radiology.
Conference proceedings are available at the conference website: modnikov.ulsu.ru.
