Krasnodar hosted a master class for oncologists

11.11.2013

Recently, a master class dedicated to supportive care in ocology was held in Krasnodar. More than 60 oncologists of the region participated in this educational event.

The educational project for doctors is implemented by professional society of haematologists headed by Irina Vladimirovna Poddubnaya, a corresponding member of RAMS, doct. med. sci., professor, head of the department of oncology and vice rector for academic affairs and international cooperation at the Russian Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education, and supported by the non-profit partnership “Equal Right to Life”. Taking into account that not yet everywhere in Russia specialists have opportunities to regularly attend educational seminars and receive information on the latest methods of treatment, experts from federal cancer centers compensate it by regular practical and theoretical sessions for colleagues and thus sharing the best practices with them.
“Modern medicine has considerable expertise to control cancer,” said the moderator of master classes Vadim Ptushkin, doct. med. sci., professor, Head of the Department of hematology and oncology of adolescents and adults at FSBI "Federal research and clinical center of pediatric hematology, oncology and immunology" of the Russian Ministry of Health. “Even in peripheral regions we meet highly qualified professionals, who are constantly self-educate themselves - search, study and analyze information. However, due to the territorial remoteness and extreme work load on the job, they do not always have the opportunity to attend training sessions in the capital. Therefore, we try to meet our colleagues’ needs and conduct classes in the regions.”
The central topic of the master class in Krasnodar was supportive care, which is an important part of the treatment of cancer patients, providing an acceptable quality of life for patients at all stages of the disease. After surgery, radiation or hormonal therapy or immunotherapy a patient needs the elimination of adverse reactions and complications, ensuring proper functioning of all the vital systems of his or her body, effective methods in the treatment of depressive disorders, prevention of infection. If maintenance therapy is not used, adverse effects of treatment may be very severe; they not only reduce the quality of life of cancer patients but can also interfere with treatment. The level of specialists’ training in this area affects the quality of treatment. Thus, the competent supportive care, which ultimate purpose is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life, is no less important task of an oncologist than the main treatment.
According to Margarita Kazantceva, the chief doctor of the Clinical Cancer Center No. 1 and chief oncologist of Krasnodar Region, master classes are one of the most effective forms of improving professional skills. During a master class, the audience can not only hear, but also see how to introduce new methods of treatment into practice, this is possible by means of expert’s commented demonstration of a sequence of actions. This form of training allows a wide range of doctors to gain practical skills and to master in new technologies. “Master classes held at the Clinical Cancer Center No. 1 with the participation of leading foreign and Russian scientists strengthened the hands-on experience of Kuban oncologists in many of the technologies that were previously available only in the central Russian clinics,” commented Margarita Kazantceva.
