World Ovarian Cancer Day events in Ulyanovsk

22.05.2014

On May 8, the World Ovarian Cancer Day is held all over the world. On this day, the round-table conference on prevention, early detection and treatment of ovarian tumors was held at Ulyanovsk Regional Cancer Center.

The Ulyanovsk Regional Cancer Center now treats and follows 694 patients with ovarian cancer, for more than 65.1 per cent of them the diagnosis was established more than 5 years ago, this is better than the average figure in Russia (57.7%). In 2013, 96 new cases of ovarian cancer were revealed in the region, regretfully, 40% of these cases are late stages; this is 2-fold higher as compared to the Russian average. Only 6.5% of cases were detected during preventive examinations, which is lower than the national average (12.2%). The importance of the problem in the region is determined by a large proportion of late stage at diagnosis and low level of detection of ovarian cancer during preventive examinations. Timely detection of cancer in the early stages is the key to the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions as evidenced by the increased life expectancy of patients who received radical treatment.
Presentation on the current state of problems of ovarian cancer and on algorithm for examination of patients with suspected malignant neoplasm of ovary was delivered by I.I. Antoneeva, doct. med. sci., professor, Head of Gynecology Department of the Ulyanovsk Regional Cancer Center. The event was attended by doctors of the Gynecology Department and the Women's Health Center that functions at the Cancer Center, gynecologists of the maternity welfare clinics of the region, employees of the Department of Oncology and Radiology of the Medical Department of the Ulyanovsk State University, activists of the regional branch of Movement Against Cancer and members of the Public Council of the Regional Cancer Center.
As part of World Ovarian Cancer Day, activists of the regional branch held a meeting for patients of the gynecological department and Women's Health Center where informational materials of IPM Movement Against Cancer and NP Equal Right to Life were distributed. Activists of “Movement Against Cancer” took part in the "hot line" on the problem of ovarian cancer.
