Minister of Health Veronika Skvortsova held the last meeting in 2014 of the Council of public organizations for the protection of patients' rights under the Russian Ministry of Health

Head of the Ministry of Health thanked the participants of the Council for the efficient work to form a system of public control in the health sector. She stressed the need for active interaction with regional authorities in healthcare and development of local councils of public organizations for the protection of patients' rights, the official website of the Ministry states.
Igor Nikitin, Director of the Department of Health Care and Spa Services spoke about the aims and objectives of the Schools of Health that help patients to control their own treatment process.
"The target audience of the Schools of Health are patients with chronic diseases; the purpose of Schools of Health is absolutely clear: to increase public awareness about diseases and their risk factors, developing the responsibility for own health," Nikitin said. "The important social and psychological element of the Schools of Health is that a person is not left alone with the disease. The Schools help patients to acquire specific skills of self-control and self-care."
Member of the Public Council of the Russian Ministry of Health, member of the Council of public organizations for the protection of patients' rights under the Russian Ministry of Health, Chairman of the Executive Committee IPM "Movement Against Cancer" Nikolay Dronov presented the project "Patients' School".
During the presentation, talking about the gained experience, Nikolay Dronov brought to the attention of the ministry leadership and colleagues from patient organizations that IPM "Movement Against Cancer" with the support of "Equal Right to Life" partnership regularly helded Patients' Schools for cancer patients and their relatives in almost all regions of Russia for the past five years. In 2013, more than 60 Russian cities hosted 162 in-person and online Patients' Schools, which were attended by more than 2,000 participants; 125 persons received personal consultations. "The main objectives of these activities are to increase the number of patients receiving reliable and the most up-to-date information about cancer therapy. Cancer patients gain self-confidence, find the strength to cope better with the disease. Lawyers help them with necessary legal information about their rights in the sphere of healthcare," Dronov said.
At Patients' Schools practicing physicians talk about modern methods of cancer diagnosis and treatment as well as rehabilitation activities, for example, they explain how to cope with side effects of chemotherapy, and give others practical advices. Lawyers clarify legal and judicial aspects associated with obtaining disability status, receiving free treatment, interaction with the employer, social care bodies. At such events, a psychologist is always present providing professional support to patients and their relatives who find themselves in a difficult situation. Announcements about Patients' Schools" are timely posted on the websites of NP "Equal Right to Life" and IPM "Movement Against Cancer", as well as in social networks.
